Not-So-Happy 4th Of July

Independence Day (aka 4th Of July) is a day when Americans celebrate their freedom. But let’s be honest, how much freedom do we really have, and is it the right kind of freedom? Innocent men, women and children are being murdered. Families being ripped apart because of their religious beliefs, where they come from or the color of their skin. Hatred, sexism, homophobia and racism flows freely and often times is even supported by the man that was elected as the Leader of our Nation, Donald Trump. How can a President, who is supposed to support the Declaration Of Independence, speak of freedom and in the same breath speak of separating children from their families and encouraging hate to others? As children, were we not taught every day, through reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, that we were one Nation, indivisible? Why are we trying to cause so many divides? And why is our “Leader” encouraging it?

I’m not looking to start a political debate here. Anyone that knows me can tell you that I’m one of the last people you would expect that from. However, I am trying to figure out how it is that we are expected to celebrate freedom when so many others in America are having their freedom ripped away from them and in some cases, their lives? Is grilling a hot dog and drinking a beer supposed to make it all better? I’m all for a party, but only when its appropriate, and with the way things are in the US today I’m having trouble finding a reason to smile.

I’m sure this post will lead to some hateful things being said in my direction and possibly the loss of some followers and friendships but you know what? If your life is filled with that much hate towards people you don’t even know then I’d rather not be a part of it anyways. I was brought up to “love thy neighbor”, which I believe is the loose translation of a Bible verse (yes, that’s right, I was raised Christian and was even top of my class in Christian Pre-School). No matter the color of your skin, the God(s) you believe in, where you come from, what your sexuality is.. none of that matters because it’s your business, not mine. My “business” is to be understanding and to not judge others before getting to know them. To live and represent the freedom that we were given. To help those in need when I can do so with an open heart and an open mind.
